The Tour de France, the greatest two-wheel race in the world, is a blur of speed and force and velocity unlike anything else in sports. So naturally, there are fans turning their backs on the race to take selfies.
The “dangerous mix of vanity and stupidity,” in the words of rider Tejay van Garderen, has enraged riders along the route.
“The worst thing is when people have got their backs to the peloton taking selfies,” said Geraint Thomas, who called the selfie-takers “the new pain in the arse.” (via. Yahoo Sports)
Rough couple years for cycling, man. First you find out that the only recognizable figure in the history of the sport is a complete fraud, then you find out that actually like 90% of these dudes are frauds, and now this? Tough break. Can't be easy riding in the Tour de France now that literally no one cares about it. You're basically going on hour long bike rides through some of the toughest terrain and hills for nothing more than personal satisfaction, and on top of that you have to dodge these snobby little assholes leaning out into the road taking selfies? Hard for me to disagree with the riders on this one. Honestly, I didn't even know people went to this thing live. Like, do you buy tickets? No way any human being with a brain pays actual money to stand on the side of a road and wait hours for a couple hundred dudes on bikes to pedal by for thirty seconds, right? What do you do when they pass you? Do you just pack up and go home? I don't know, I can't really get my head around that. I guess if you're waiting around all day just to see some cyclists go by you'd want a picture of it to make it worth the time though. So you know what? I change my mind. I think the cyclists are the real pains in the arse here. Fuck those guys. Just don't run into people who aren't on the road. That can't be that hard.
